The Sheffield Methods Institute in collaboration with the School of East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield is hosting a three-quarter day conference focused on residential segregation and inequality in European and Chinese cities on 31 July 2017.
Rapid growth in internal and international migration over the past decades, and the associated rise of nationalism have led to increasing concerns about segregation, whether it is rising or falling and whether segregation is necessarily a bad thing.
At the same time there are growing concerns about rising inequality. Inequalities in income, health and other aspects of well-being across different ethnic and social groups, also raise questions about the links with segregation. To what extent do inequality and segregation reinforce one another, particularly given the tendency for housing markets to sort residents according to their ability to afford the best locations?
This international and interdisciplinary conference aims to offer a forum for researchers, policy makers and practitioners to discuss and debate about the nature, causes and consequences of segregation and inequality in European and Chinese contexts and consider solutions to tackling them. It is sponsored by the ESRC-CASS project entitled ‘Urban Development, Migration, Segregation and Inequality’. This International Centre Partnership brings together researchers from three leading urban research organisations: the Urban Big Data Centre at University of Glasgow, the Sheffield Methods Institute at University of Sheffield, and the CASS Institute of Urban and Environmental Studies in Beijing.
The conference is followed by a 4-day summer school on Applied Statistical Methods for Analysing Segregation & Inequality open to all conference attendees.
